If you are having problems such as pain, bleeding, or if your cyst is large, twisted, or cancerous you doctor will want to do an ovarian cyst removal. If your an older woman you run the risk of your cyst becoming cancerous if not removed. There are several risk factors that can cause problems during the removal process. This risk factors include things like; obesity, illness, smoking, and alcohol and drug abuse. Medications that are taken regularly can be a problem too. If you are on insulin, sedatives, or muscle relaxers your doctor will need to know. Take your time when making a decision to have an ovarian cyst removed. Have a discussion with your doctor about risk and success rates. Find out what you should expect before and after your surgery. If you decide to have the procedure then you should be prepared to have a physical exam, blood test, urine test, and an ultrasound or even an x-ray. There are two different procedures used to remove ovarian cyst. The first one is laparoscopic surgery. This is the less invasive procedure. You will have a small incision made just below your naval. The laparoscope will be placed in that incision. Your surgeon will then pump carbon dioxide into the abdomen so the organs are easier to see. The laparoscope wil then find the cyst so your surgeon can remove it. He may need to make one or two more small incisions to remove the cyst. The other procedure is open suregery. This surgery is more invasive. The surgeon will need to make an incision through your abdomen and muscles. He will then completely open your abdomen so he can locate the blod vessel that lead to the cyst. He will clamp and tie these blood vesels so he can remove the cyst. You will have stitches or stamples in your abdomen to close it back up. Your recovery time will depend on the procedure used to remove the cyst. You will have some pain for 3-4 days with laparoscopic surgery and 7-10 days with open surgery. Your doctor will want you to follow some post operative care instructions which will include no strenuous activity for 2-6 weeks, no lifting, you will need to abstain from sexual activity. Your doctor will prescribe something for the pain you will experience. Surgery takes it's toll on the body and you will need to give your body time to recover.
